Books have been stated on this topic, and the bickering and discussion about where the "hot" slot games are positioned in a casino are still bubbling - over 60 years after one armed bandits were 1st placed in the casinos.

The quintessential rule is that the better slots were placed just inside the main entry of the casino; so that individuals walking by would see real jackpot winners and be stimulated to come into the casino and play. Our reasoning is that this is definitely no longer the case.

The majority of the mega casinos today are jumbo complexes and it is not possible to see inside from the sidewalk, so there's no longer a reason to put the 'loose' slot machine games in close proximity to any exits.
